HTHCV Food Festival Project
Description:
This project was in integrated project that included both Humanities and Chemistry. This semester, in our project, we focused on learning about the story behind our food. In humanities we learned more about the Human story behind food. Whether is was world hunger, food insecurity, slavery in our food system and farm workers .In chemistry we learned the chemistry behind growing food. We looked at planting food, creating soil with proper texture and nutrients, creating compost from waste, and also recognizing all of the water and energy it takes to grow different types of food. In chemistry we learned the chemistry behind growing food. We looked at planting food, creating soil with proper texture and nutrients, creating compost from waste, and also recognizing all of the water and energy it takes to grow different types of food. We got assigned groups and within those groups we were able to chose to grow something and my group chose to grow tomatoes. We had weekly plant data sheets where we focused on qualitative and quantitative data. We made sure to add pictures so we had visuals of how our plant has changed throughout the growth. We made sure to water the plants as well as making sure it has a healthy soil. We planted two tomato plants and on one plant we used compost and the other we used organic fertilizer so these sheets were helpful to see the difference between using those two and seeing if it makes a difference in the growth.
We investigated our food systems through in class research and field experiences. We visited Wild Willow farm where we learned about water usage as well as what it takes to grow plants. We attended Father Joe's Villages where we got the opportunity to feed the homeless. We also visited Farmer's Markets and Local food stores to be able to ask questions such as where they get their from and how far it travels to get to them. We took a field trip to Pizzo's Pizzeria where we were able to interview the manager and then after we made pizza!

Exhibition Reflection:
Our team exhibited at the Embarcadero at Seaport Village. We held a food festival to share with the public what we learned through interactive booths, delicious recipes we cooked, and a student-created magazine with articles about community resources and organic, healthy recipes. Our exhibition went so well, it was very organized and flowed very nicely. Our audience seemed to enjoy our booths and what we had to present to them. My booth was about Industrial vs. Local food systems. We had a poster where we listed the differences between these two food systems. When people came to our booth we would give them some of our dish if they wanted some and then explain our poster to them.
Its very important to be aware of what we eat because throughout the process between the farm and store, the food can change drastically, such as have added GMO's and pesticides. Learning about the story behind our has made me a more aware and conscious consumer.
