Math
Description:
The topics we learned this year in math were probability, quadratics, and similarity. At the beginning of the year we set goals for ourselves. My goal was to have a growth mindset because I tend to give up very easily. I'm glad I set this goal because I have grown in this area and this math class has pushed me to do so. This year, I have used my leadership skills a lot in this classroom because I love to share my methods and answers to my class so that I'm able to help everyone. When I'm not helping people, I am seeking for help. I always make sure to ask my peers for help and thanks to the classroom culture that we have created, I am not embarrassed for not understanding something, so with self advocacy I always make sure things are clarified.
Reflection:
Math used to be my favorite subject when I was younger. As I got older, math has gotten more and more challenging and so I have lost interest because it now feels like I am forced to do something I think is hard rather than enjoying doing my work but, our math classroom environment has made math fun. In this classroom I feel comfortable to speak and share my ideas, even if I don't think my answer is correct because we are all there to help each other understand. Not only do we share what the answer is, but we also share "how"; by sharing methods. Like I said before, when I don't understand something in class, I never hesitate to ask for help because I know my classmates and teachers will always be there to clarify and help me. The classroom environment has made learning enjoyable because I know my classmates and teachers actually want us to learn and understand.
Math Portfolios:
Quadratics Portfolio
- This was an algebra unit where we learned how to graph quadratic equations. We were also introduced to the quadratic formula.
Probability Portfolio
- This unit we learned about probability. We learned how to measure of the likelihood that an event will occur.
Similarity Portfolio
- During this unit we learned how to find out if triangle and quadrilaterals are similar using given angles and side lengths. We learned that there are many theorems that can be used to solve whether two shapes are similar.
Areas for Growth Document
- This document is a culmination of my hard work, drive, and determination throughout the school year. It represents the reflective process I went through to grow as a mathematician during the 2015-2016 school year in our class. This document includes a variety of comments from Mr. Carter and from myself, and also includes my reflective process. Mr. Carter and I set goals and continuously looked at how I grew as a student/learner throughout the year. This document was used to prove to Mr. Carter that we tried our best to meet our goals and share with him how we did so.
